Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Blue screen of death on XP every time

Post by curtay » Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:59 pm

I installed 1.3 beta and every time I press record I get the blue screen of death instantly. I also tried audacity a year ago and it had the same problem with the older version. I have an alienware laptop. I assume this happens on all of this model of alienware laptops. I have windows XP with all the latest updates. I have plenty of harddrive space and ram. I have not done anything weird to my computer settings. it's not viruses, I tried audacity when my computer was new too. Just letting you know of this bug and I hope it gets fixed. Other recording programs work fine.

<<<I have not done anything weird to my computer settings. >>>

That you know of.

Do you have a lot of plugins or other add-on programs? Audacity can do some very entertaining things when it encounters a plugin that it doesn't like.

You can generally assume it won't cause a BSOD, however. You have to be seriously naughty to get that.

<<<Just letting you know of this bug and I hope it gets fixed. >>>

You need to be careful about that "bug" phrase. One unstable computer is not a bug. It's a bug when you and several hundred of your closest friends can all get the same crash and do it exactly the same way whenever you wish.

Does it do that with 1.3.11?

Yes it happens on 1.3.11 and whatever version was out a year ago. The first time I tried it I didn't have any plugins, and this time I have the antares evo vst plugin. What do you mean by add-on programs? I hadn't gotten a BSOD in months except for this.

Those are the really scary English words. I run three different Windows machines with video and audio production programs and haven't had a BSOD this decade.

Audacity is the canary in the coal mine. If your machine is already on the edge, Audacity will push you over right away.

Have you ever done a memory check? I mean the serious one that runs all night?

All my machines will run that continuously for eight hours.

Audacity is a nice app havent had any trouble since now.

And dear staffman maybe it is time to face the fact that your little app may fail? I keep getting BSOD every time on a language selection. And guess what? All my crew working on 8 pcs are getting this. I've also sent your app to a random girl and she also received something she called "a blue scary thing".

Ive downloaded from your source.

Ive downloaded a stable version

And no, it is not my pc, it is your app cause I keep getting probs with it exceptionally as well as like 13 other pcs.

This was retoric,

have a nice day.

Oh, it's possible. I didn't say it wasn't. We get too many postings like: "I can't find the Stop button. That's a bug, right?" So anybody who includes the "B" word in the first posting is immediately suspect.

Versions of Audacity 1.3.11 and before all had problems -- although not BSODs, that I know of. 1.3.12 was the first almost unconditionally stable version and we pushed hundreds of users over to it successfully. They issued 1.3.13 a little bit ago and it seems to be a success, although I haven't tried it.

What else is running on your machines? Have any users experienced the failures who have nothing to do with your business? Our company has a standard list of applications and setups on each machine, so failures tend to happen in groups.

Did you get Audacity from here:

http://audacityteam.org/download/

Did everyone download Audacity fresh, or did someone get it once and you've been sharing it? Somewhere in my memory... Windows is the install that you can get either as an EXE installer or the ZIP file. Do you remember which you got?

And we don't have "Staff." It's all volunteer.

Dear nano911, it's not really a bug until you can find a step by step way of reproducing it.

Audacity is a free open source project made by a group of volunteers, on their free time, which don't get paid for it...

Free software project rely a lot on the feedback and contribution from the community, so if you'd like to help Audacity getting better and having any bug corrected you could start by giving a more detailed description of how that "bug" can be reproduced. "We" can't fix something "we" don't see and "it gives me a scary screen" doesn't give much info to work on...

So... what's the operating system on those 13 PCs? Which audacity version are they running? What are the steps to make it crash? Any other info might be helpful.
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
