static in background with voice recording
I am doing a simple voice recording in audacity and am getting lots of static in the background through the whole recording (60 seconds). I have used audacity for this purpose in the past and I didn't have this trouble. I am using the same headset with mic as previous. Any ideas why I would be getting so much static?

Re: static in background with voice recording
Crackling like breaking wooden matchsticks? Is this a USB headset? Try another different USB connection or unplug and replug a number of times to try and push any dirt away. Restart the machine (not just Audacity) with the headset connected.
Have you checked if you have enough room on your hard drive? I don't think that causes cracking directly, but that could cause other problems which could cause crackling.

is microstuff doing automatic indexing
is antivirus doing a scan
any of lots of useless "service" programs could decide to run when you are recording and cause static
is the mike connection solid?
did you get dirt in the mike ?
are you sure it is in the recording and not caused by the playback?
