no. i think we want both
an easy way to mark the point where the next cut starts
which is the place the cd would start if you go direct to that song
and an easy way to stick a label on that cut point and LOCK it down
without having to drag those arrow thingies and make the little circles line up on top of each other and then realign the circles to the original cut point

we should be able to mark the start of the next track on the cd
and then associate a label with it without all the other shenanigans

You can use Ctrl+I to create a "split" in the track. This makes it extremely easy to locate an exact position in a track.
When adjusting labels, they will "snap to" splits in tracks.

Splits do not affect the exported file.

i have no trouble identify the exact point. i just wish it would stay where i marked it.

maybe audacity is doing too much. all i need is to mark the point to start play on the cd. and to put in a name that matches that selection.

ideally it is one click for each marker. and type in the name.
our having to mess with sliding arrows, resliding circles, zooming in and out to make that right is just a time consuming PITA.

if i have a recording with 5 songs i only want to click 4 times --
and done. and then just type in the names and be ready to export multiple. i would happily add a useless click at the front and end if that was easier for the developers.

i have not coded for years, but it seems as if those guys are doing a lot of needless things. but as an analyst and a user , if there is a reason for all of the arrows and circles and sliding things around i dont see it.

Then why don't you do that?

1) Click on the track where you want the song to start and press Ctrl+B (while playback is stopped)
2) Type in the name for the song.

Alternatively you can do it during playback:
1) Play the track and at the point where you want the song to start press Ctrl+M
2) Type in the name for the song
3) Press the "Up" cursor key to return focus to the audio track.

If you don't need the advanced functionality just ignore it.

i thought that was required to put in labels and export correctly

okay - if i dont need it i am still curious - what is it used for ?
there still must be an easier way to do whatever than sliding those circles on top of each otehr and then moving them back where they belong .

A typical use is with Export Multiple based on Labels:
In this first example, you would enable the option "Include audio before first label".
The exported files would then be:
1 > Start to tr2 label
2 > tr2 label to tr3 label
3 > tr3 label to end


In this second example you would NOT enable the option "Include audio before first label".
The exported files would then be:
1 > the region enclosed by the tr1 marker
2 > the region enclosed by the tr2 marker
3 > the region enclosed by the tr3 marker

Note that in example 2, some of the silence between the songs is not exported.

A completely different use is illustrated here -

Case: Replace a section in track 1 with a section from track 2

There is a section in track 1 that needs to be deleted, but the exact length is not yet known. The region in track 1 has been roughly marked with a region label. The exact length of region will be determined after the section from track 2 has been decided.
In this illustration the area in track 1 has been marked ("split lines" have also been created which ensures that there are marks that are "locked" to track 1), and the region in track 2 has been selected. The use of temporary markers/labels is extremely useful when working on multi-track projects as it enables multiple sections to be marked for rapid location/selection.

Other uses include "transcription", "karaoke lyrics", comparing multiple verses/choruses in a song......

that much i got already
why do they have the arrows at all?
why can they be moved?
why can you move them to line up the circles on top of each other?
why doesnt the circle stay put when i move the arrows ?
all i see is a lot of makework microstuff "function" that is not useful.
if all the rest of that has a use - what is it ?
why not leave the arrows off and just put in a marker?
