Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

DIGITAL GLITCH WHEN RECORDING

Post by NIC LLAMB » Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:32 pm

HELLO. I AM EXPERIENCING DIGITAL GLITCHES AT RANDOM INTERVALS OF MY RECORDED MATERIAL.

I AM RUNNING AUDACITY 1.3.11 (unicode) BETA on WINDOWS 7
on a BRAND NEW GATEWAY LAPTOP that should have ample hard drive space, RAM, etc...

I use an M-AUDIO moble pre usb to record with.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the glitches. They sound like very short (less than a second) digital clicks that interrupt the recorded audio.
The moble pre usb is relatively new (about a year old). I used it on my old laptop (sony vaio) without incident.

Is it perhaps a buffering problem? or a latency issue?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a USB issue. You're not using a USB hub are you? (USB hubs tend to perform badly with USB audio devices).

Hey thanks for the reply.

I'm actually not using a usb hub on this... just plugging the usb straight in.
I actually tried changing the usb cables out, but got no results.
Any other ideas?

thanks for the help

Check that you are using the latest drivers for your operating system (get them here: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MobilePreUSB.html )
Avoid running other programs in the background - especially anything that is CPU or disk intensive. USB audio is unlikely to run smoothly while Windows is updating, looking for updates, scanning for malware or other resource intensive activities.

Hello<

I have spent some more time trying to come up with a solution to the digital glitch problem to no avail. I downloaded the most recent driver for my mobile pre usb recording device and I am running audacity with no other programs in the background. Frustratingly, I am still getting digital glitches in my recorded material that come in for a fraction of a second every 3-4 minutes and ruin my audio. Any other suggestions?

Thank You,
Chris

Can you see the clicks on the blue waveforms? Do the clicks always happen in exactly the same place in the performance when you play the show? Like there's always a click when the singer sings the word "you?"

Do the blue waves ever spike all the way up to 1 and does it click right then? It doesn't have to be a computer error. You can get clicking distortions if the show is too loud.
