Problem loading .wav files.

Hello I am new to Audacity so I hope this is not a silly question.
When I try to open some not all .wav files with Audacity I get the following message--

Audacity recoginized the type of file l:.........de.wav.
Importers supposedly supporting such files are:
WAV, AIFF, and other uncompressed types, FFmpeg-compatiable files,
but none of them understood this file format.

What dose all that mean?
How do I open these files?
Is there a fix?
I thought Audacity worked well with the wav file format. :?
I can play the files on all my media players fine.

I am using v1.3.11 on a Windows7 64bit PC.

It probably means that the "WAV" file is not really a WAV file. Just because it is called "something.wav" does not mean that it is actually in WAV format. Tools such as SUPER (by erightsoft) or QuickTime (by Apple) can analyse media files and tell you exactly what format the files are. (SUPER is free and can convert most media file types into other file types. Another good alternative for converting audio files is Foobar2000, which is also free).

Yep I have checked them and they are wav files.

I fired up my old PC and they load and edit in both my old- very old - audio editors.

What are the specs? 44100, 16-bit, Stereo, Little Endian?

You have Windows set to show you file extensions, right?
