I am a newbie and have a phone ringing sound in a recording that I am trying to clean up. Please provide me any steps to take to eliminate the phone sound or a link to instructions on what to do. Thanks so much!

that will be tough
best to avoid noise than to try to remove it
next best is to re-record the content

but if not feasible
then

you could try the noise removal effect/tool
if you have a place where only the phone was ringing
(if not then record the ringing only and splice that onto the recording for use by teh filter - then delete later)

but this is not really noise so not sure how well it would work

and if you do have a ring only place on the recording then
you could use the analyse function to see if there are discrete freqs
that are involved
possibly remove them with some severe eq at those freqs

really need a good parametric eq but you would have to buy that assuming there was one available for audacity

but i fear that the ringing may not just be simple tones that eq can handle without messing up the rest of the recording

There's probably not much you can do to fix it using Audacity's built in effects, but you may have some luck using one of these tools:
