Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Retrieve files from Export Files?

Post by ARGH! » Sat Mar 06, 2010 7:23 pm

I'm running windows 7,audacity 1.3. After exporting a file, I am unable to find it with my cd burner. In Export Files when I click on it, (either right or left click) the WAV file disappears and leaves only the data file. How do I rertieve a file from Export Files?

Just to cover the bases:

Audacity does not save sound files. Audacity will Save a Project which consists (in it's smallest form) an .AUP file and a _data folder.

You can Export a WAV file which will open up in Windows Media and allow you to burn a Music CD. Make sure you call the file a name that has upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore and dash only. No other characters. No dates unless you write them 20100306. Make sure you didn't start the same with a dot.

Export the file to your desktop so you can easily find it.

If it still gets lost, you can use the Windows search tools to locate the name.

Windows will not show you filename extensions, but you can force it to.

======================
Hidden File Extensions
-- Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > [ ] Hide Extensions for Known File Types (deselect)
-- Apply (to this folder) or Apply to All Folders
-- OK

Thanks for the reply. I'm running Windows 7, there is no tools tab in 'computer'. A search turns up nothing. How do I send a file to the desktop from Audacity?

You'll need to wait for one of the Windows Elves to arrive. That's how it works in Windows XP.

What did you call the Export when you named it?

Windows elves I don't understand. I recorded a song off of an album, just to experiment. I named the export after the song. I can get as far as the metadata editor, and after that I cannot find the file again. I have tried two files so far, and they both turn out this way. Is there something else I need to know about exporting?

When you get to the Metadata Editor - Click on "OK".

The metadata editor can be prevented from popping up automatically by going to:
Edit menu > Preferences > Import/Export
and deselecting the option for making it pop up.
(Most of the regulars on this forum change this setting and would prefer that it was deselected by default).

Okay, I clicked on ok in metadata editor. It exported the entire project as a wav file, like before. I don't see an option for an export location, such as desktop. Same problem, I can't find the wav file with my cd burner. There must be a step in the export method that I am missing.

Okay, I got it. It took a little funnin' around, but I figured out how to get the file into my cd burner. Now I have to figure out how to edit the songs out of band practice and delete the between songs chatter.
Thanks Guys, I appreciate your help.
