....I had to restore the default settings of my laptop (Windows 7 OS).... just reinstalled Audacity and the recording console is in another language evn though I checked the "english" selection....wtf? what do I do?

I know the general fuzzy overview of this. Since you didn't blow everything away and reinstall Windows, only Windows started out fresh. Audacity leaves preference files behind and they don't become new when you reinstall Audacity. So your shiny new Audacity install is standing on old, stained, cracked, damaged preference files.

The Windows elves will have to tell you how to fix that. I have no idea.

in Audacity 1.3 a set of preferences is stored per user in an audacity.cfg - the complication arises in that if you have ever had 1.2 installed then the preferences from there are stored in the Windows Registry - and when Audacity 1.3 finds no cgg file on startup it "helpfully" goes to the registry to see if there are settings left behind from 1.2 - and if so it uses those as its starting default settings for 1.3.

I did it! went >edit>preferences>clicked through all the choices even though I didn't understand them then when I came to a choice where I could choose languages, I chose "english" then clicked "OK" and everything went to English....I'm so relieved...now I can go back to being frustrated by recording and dealing with the delay I hear when recording over a new track

....but now I'm having the same problem as bfore where the first 3 seconds of didjeridoo record fine but then after that it's all flangy and I can't figure out what settings I used....ARRGHHH pulling hair out and fixing nooose to the rafters in my ceiling....

Does it actually record the performance like that, or are you getting a distorted monitor/headphones?

If you like to record internet audio, you need to know to turn off What-U-Hear or Mix-Out before you try anything live.

Also as a proof of performance, go into Audacity Preferences and turn off "Play tracks while recording new ones, Software Playthrough and Hardware Playthrough." Restart Audacity.

Now make a recording without being able to hear what you're doing. Pretend you're performing to another human.

Play that back. Does it sound OK all the way through? If it doesn't, then you have a Windows setting incorrect somewhere. Audacity only does very few tricks in real time and you just turned all of them off.

If it is the same then, in Windows Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, there should be an option called something like "Noise Cancellation" or "Noise Rediction" or something similar, which you need to turn off.
