muddied recording (streaming audio)

Hi. (newbie) I've used Audacity for some time to work music files. Just now tried to actually record streaming audio with Beta 1.3. The recording is muddied, garbled and has a distinct echo to it. Previously I used SoundTap for recording streaming audio....which worked great (but unusable with Win 7) Any ideas where I went wrong? Thanks

If you are using a laptop or any other computer that has a microphone, you are probably recording from the microphone instead of "Stereo Mix".
To record sounds playing on your computer you should ideally set the default recording input to Stereo Mix by going to the Windows Control Panel and setting it there.
See here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

If you changed settings, did you restart your machine?

I have a license for Total Recorder and that gets along with Vista, and probably Win7 by now.

You can try to work at this upside down. Can you make a clean recording from your built-in microphone?
