No sound when audio is played back

I have windows7. I am able to import and record audio. But when I play it back there is no sound. How can I fix this?

have you asked this in a win7 forum somewhere?

try googling for win7 vista and no sound output
if somebody else had the problem you may find the answer faster
that way assuming it is a win7 settings issue and not audacity

What are you recording from?

If it is a USB device, then as long as it is plugged in, the computer tries to play back through the USB device as well as record from it, unless you tell it not to. (Not a good thing if the device is a microphone or turntable!)
In Control Panel > Sounds and Audio, go to Audio properties and set your computer's sound card as the default playback device.

If it is not a USB device you are recording from, tell us what it is, what type of computer you have and how it is connected, so that we can try to help.

I had that problem too using Windows 7 64-bit and Audacity 1.3.11. But I forget how I fixed it. It was quite simple though. I think it had something to do with clicking on TRANSPORT and making sure Overdub and Software Playthrough had checkmarks beside them. My recording now is quite good except that if I leave a separate radio on in the background at the same time as I'm listening to what I'm taping on my speaker, there's a very slight delay between what I hear on the speaker and what I hear on the radio in the other room. The simple solution was to just turn the extra radio off. No need for it when you can hear it on the speaker anyway.

Otherwise the program works great. Occasionally I will admittedly get a lot of echo on the program, but also learned to take care of that. It usually happens only if I open audacity twice or am operating other programs at the same time. I have 4GB on my computer but it seems that Audacity doesn't like a lot of competition for space. At any rate it's still the cute little lovable program it always was.
