What audio sockets have you got on your computer? Are they labelled or colour coded?

New to Audacity....seems like a great program....loaded no prob, using Vista home ed. Can anyone suggest a like program for Video recording/editing?

well I have a headphone socket in the front as well as sockets in the back. (the back ones are color coded)

The sockets at the back are normally used for connecting a pair of speakers - the one on the front is conveniently placed for the more frequent plugging and unplugging of headphones.

Try the headphone socket on the front first (it's easier to get at). Hopefully plugging in your headphones will bring the "RealTek High Definition Audio - Headphones" output to life in the Windows Control Panel "Playback" section. Sounds playing through the headphones should be able to be recorded using "Stereo Mix".
