Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Unable to record radio programmes

Post by Corinda » Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:06 pm

Hi,

There's a similar question a few posts down, but I didn't want to hijack it.

I have just bought a new tower with Windows 7. Previously, I used XP, had Audacity installed and used to be able to record radio programmes, both BBC radio and independent stations.

Because I now have Windows 7, I had to install the new Beta version.

I did so, and have tried to record radio programmes. However, like the poster below, I also get the message:

Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.

If anyone can advise me, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you.

James

Thanks - multiple questions in the same thread get very confusing.

You need to set the recording source for you computer to "Stereo Mix". This option is not always available in Windows 7, but if it is available, here's how to set it: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

Once you have done that, you can open Audacity and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and set the required recording and playback devices.

Hi,

Many thanks. You've solved my problem.

The Stereo Mix wasn't visible - but by following the instructions you pointed me towards, I was able to make it visible, then enable it.

Just did a test recording - and it worked. The only minor problem was saving it as the set-up seems to have changed a bit with the latest Audacity release. But I went to 'Export', played around a bit and eventually got there.

So, again, thank you very much indeed. I'm very grateful.

The old Audacity Export was fine and simple until you want to change something. Then it was a full safari into the Preferences system. The new Audacity puts the options for each Export right at the export step.

The one thing that happened a little wacky was the MetaData Entry Panel also pops up in the event you wanted to name your performers or include other show information. It's not obvious that you can just OK it and it will go away.

There's a preference where you can stop it from popping up during Export.

You know on a vinyl record there is a little sticky paper in the middle which tells you the artist name, etc? That's the Metadata Transport Region.
