Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Many thanks for your suggestions and help. I can meet my recording needs with v.1.2.6 and (if necessary) import into v.1.3.11 for editing and processing.
Your comments about the role of the computer do not explain fully why there is no problem with the older (v.1.2.x) versions of Audacity. Presumably there must be some conflict between Audacity and my sound card/drivers and/or operating system. Perhaps what I really need now is a new computer!

Cracked it at last. I have finally been able to install the latest driver for my sound card (I had to search out a method of doing it indireectly) but Audacity v.1.3.11 is now working as it should.

Is that what Americans refer to as a curveball ;)

Possibly if that is the American equivalent of a fast in-swinging yorker.
When I tried to install the driver initially, I got a message saying that my system could not detect any Creative hardware. I think possibly because it is an old pice of hardware.

:D Ah, the glorious sound of leather on willow. I'm assuming the meaning is similar, but without the toe-crushing connotation.
