Sound trouble

Ok, so I'm rather new to Audacity and what not and I'm having a bit of trouble in the beginning.

I'm trying to play a song through Audacity. When my speakers are plugged in to my laptop, the song starts playing but there is absolutely no sound. If I unplug the speakers from my laptop during the song, the song starts playing out of my laptop. If I try to play the song without my speakers plugged in, then I get an error: "Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."

How do I stop this from happening!

Are you using USB speakers by any chance?

Nah, plugging them straight into the headphone jack with an audio cable.

Do you know what sort of sound card it is? (Realtek? Simtel?)
Which version of Windows?
Audacity 1.2.6? (look in Audacity Help > About Audacity)

I'm not sure about the sound card. Windows 7 and Audacity 1.3.11-beta.

Before you open Audacity, go to the Windows Control Panel and check your recording and playback devices. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ng_devices
Also check that other sounds are playing correctly through your speakers.

Open Audacity and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and check that you have the same devices (as enabled in the Windows Control Panel) selected for Recording and Playback.

I'll move this topic to the Audacity 1.3.x part of the forum (you posted in the 1.2.x part)
