VST effects too slow to render

Post by keithmichaels » Wed Jan 27, 2010 8:53 pm

When I use a VST effect in 1.3, it is always extremely slow to render. For example, I used a classic compressor on a :36 mono piece of audio. It took 1:36 for Audacity to
finish adding the effect to the audio. If I run the same scenario in Audacity 1.2, it only takes 22 seconds.

I have an nice machine with 3GB of RAM and all non essential processes disabled so I don't think it is a ram issue.

Will this be the norm now? I have projects that run over 50 minutes. Yikes! :o

It's not just VST effects. The Nyquist effects are also considerably slower in Audacity 1.3. I mentioned this to one of the developers some time ago and he was going to look into it. In the run up to the Audacity 2.0 release the emphasis is on stability rather than speed, but I agree that this should be looked into, even if it has to wait 'till after 2.0 is released.
