The spec for you PC should tell you. Or you should be able to use the Windows Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices to find out.

Ok - so the first thing to do is to ensure that you have the latest device drivers installed for that Soundcard. If you Google CONEXANT HIGH DEFINITION SMARTAUDIO 221 this should give you several sites where the latest drivers can be downloaded.

1) control panel->sounds->Recording________ external mic

but nothing else is there even when I right click on the blank space and click on the show hidden devices

The input devices that you get are entirely dependent on the soundcard that you have and the associated drivers - it varies bt computer and by soundcard. Increasingly manufacturers seem to be removing the functionality to record what is playing on the computer (e.g. live streaming from the Internet) - presumably to try to circumvent piracy.

You can work around this by using an external USB soundcard (see this sticky thread: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9477) - you can then loopback the outputs of the soundcard to its inputs - and set Windows and Audacity so that Audio input and output is targetted on the external soundcard. This thread may give you some more insight: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=4825

You don't actually say what you are trying to record - is it what is playing on your computer - or are you trying to record from a turntable/cassette deck/radio?

I record FM radio by feeding the outputs of my wife's old Technics FM tuner into the inputs of my Edirol UA-1EX soundcard and thence into PC and Audacity via USB - Gives excellent results.
