Setting bit rate to 546 ensures lossless wma?
Hi. Using 1.3.8. Downloaded and installed the FFmpeg plug-in. Would like to create lossless wma's; is it sufficient to set the bit rate (the only audio property which appears settable) to 546 (max offered)? If not, is there a way to do this, i.e., export to an assured lossless wma? If not, is this where I formalize a feature request.
(Also, as soon as this is added, it'd be nice if wma were added to the export options available to chains.
again.) Thanks!

...and all we would need to do is write checks to Microsoft. Windows Media is a proprietary format. Although Windows Media does support lossless, I doubt you can get to it with conventional tools. I think they published it just to say they could do it.
Most people want the whole "The Barber of Seville" in 10KB. Audacity defaults to WAV format because that is one of the lossless formats -- and it's a Microsoft native format at that.

Re: Setting bit rate to 546 ensures lossless wma?
Gotchya.
So I'm wasting my time using NCH's Switch to do this w/ the conversion parameters set to 440 bps 96 kHz 2 channel 24 bit? Same problem with trying to access m4a (Apple MP4) lossless? Or should I re-post to the Mac list? (At this point you're probably wondering what I'm trying to do: I just learned about lala - from one of those "want-Berber-of-Seville-in-10kB-ers," i.e., she had no clue as to which all formats lala would allow you to upload, and in particular, if any were lossless. I subsequently found out that, other than mp3, it only allows m4a's and wma's...wait a second, it didn't even occur to me to check to see if all I have to do is change the extension...)

Most of the time, the file type is burned into the file header in addition to the filename extension. It will try to open and then become damaged or crash.
Most successful people use the real, uncompressed formats (WAV, AIFF, etc.) for production and then the compressed formats WMA, AAC, MP3 for delivery or posting. Trying to cross them rarely works.
"I downloaded a heavily compressed and damaged MP3 and none of the Audacity filters and effects work right. When I try to export a new MP3, the file gets bigger and sounds like garbage."
Yes. That's correct.
Most of the posting and hosting sites have a FAQ or instructions how to do it. Particularly YouTube should be read carefully since their compression and formats changed recently.
Even the "lossless" formats rarely get to the filesizes of a high-quality compressed format.

Understood. (I was hoping lala might be the "Holy Grail" of an online archive for my collection, but I guess I must keep searching...)

LALA appears to be a Music CD swapping and sales site with a side of MP3 management. It doesn't say anything about other sound formats.
