Recording sounds from the computer.

Win 2000, SoundMAX card. Audacity 1.3.10
I think I should be able to record anything I hear played on my computer but I can't.
EG I'm trying to record work I've done on a drum pattern editor.
I start the player and I can hear the drum track ok thru the speakers.
I start Audacity recording while the drums are playing but it does not record. I get a flatline.
I opened Edit/preferences/devices and it shows Host =MME, Playback and Record both = SoundMAX digital audio,
I must be missing some settings somewhere.
