2 channel selection
When I open Preferences to set playback, recording and channels there is no choice for 2-channel stereo. Don't know whether to choose MME or Windows direct sound as host. Tried both and the choice doesn't come up on either. I'm using a Berringer U-Control USB device, and am trying to record cassettes to the computer. I selected the USB audio codec for recording and playback. I changed from version 1.2.6 to 1.3.x(Beta) because I had problems about half the time with the program closing when I would select "stop" at the end of a track. I would get a " audacity exe. file has stopped working" message, although the recordings and exports were successful the other half of the time. I'm using Vista Home Premium. Any advice on any of these issues would be greatly appreciatted.

Whose preferences? Audacity or Windows?
Audacity 1.2 has only shaky support under Windows Vista and Windows 7 (And Leopard, and Snow Leopard....etc)
You should only be using Audacity 1.3.
I would remove all the Audacity programs from your machine and reinstall a fresh 1.3. If the system does not ask you for a language at startup, then you have a damaged Windows Registry and we need to take other steps.

Re: 2 channel selection
Koz,
Thanks for the reply. The preferences were in Audacity, (edit>preferences>devices ). I uninstalled all versions and reinstalled 1.3.10-beta, and still have the same problem. It offers a choice of 1or 2 tracks for all the other recording devices listed, sound mapper, realtek line in and microphone, but just mono for the Microphone (USB audio codec) choice. Should I be using MME or Windows direct sound for the interface choice?
I have the same problem with either choice.

Re: 2 channel selection
Oh, also they did ask for a language choice when the program was finishing installing.
