Stereo Mix not Showing up Under Recording Devices--Windows 7

I just upgraded from Windows Vista (64-bit) to Windows 7. I installed Audacity 1.3.10, but discovered that I couldn't record sound coming through my speakers/headphones anymore. Under Recording devices in the Device Manager, I've selected Show Disabled/Disconnected devices, but the only options it shows are to Microphones, neither of which give me anything when I try to record through them in Audacity. (Audacity also lets me select Microsoft Sound Mapper, which is not displayed in the device manager, but it doesn't work either) I was able to record fine before upgrading to Windows 7, so presumably my hardware isn't the problem. I have a laptop with a rather generic sound device, which the device manager says is fully updated; I've tried all the advice I've found by searching around this forum. Can anyone help me restore Audacity's recording capability?

That isn't helpful; it assumes the proper recording device is displayed in the control panel, which it isn't. (Which is the problem) I need to know how to get it to show up there in the first place to I can record from it.

If that didn't help -- there wasn't a setting under "Advanced Devices," Obsolete Services, or some such, Then there may not be one. Not all PCs support Mix-Out, and it's getting more and more popular not to.

See...the gray box notes.

Don't you have anything under Disabled or Discontinued Devices? Did you update your software drivers?

If that's not available on your machine no matter what, then you need one of the third party software tools. I use Total Recorder on my PCs. That will produce a WAV file from on-line shows that you can then edit in Audacity.

This is my Recording Devices menu. There's nothing there.

It's strange because the proper devices showed up in Vista. Does Windows 7 remove this functionality?

"Mix-Out" is a joint dance between the physical hardware, the operating system and the driver software. If anybody in the chain decides the functionality is going to vanish, it vanishes.

This is a nasty surprise for many people. "It worked in Windows XP. How come I can't..."

What happens if you Google? There have been instances of special software packages to make this work -- I mean other than the paid one. You did check for sound driver updates, right? People are writing Windows 7 drivers minute by minute to catch up.

Here's another piece from the forum.

They point out a software package you might be able to get to work.

I did check for updates via device manager and it says my sound drivers are up to date. (Of course, I don't really trust the device manager to keep drivers updated) Have others with Windows has this problem? (If it is an operating system problem)

Here's another hint. There's a place you need to log in as Administrator to change a setting.
