The Built-in windows (vista) sound recorder records music and voice just fine (with USB mic), but audacity creates a slight popping sound consistently any time a sound is recorded -- that is, it records properly, but adds in a popping background noise, NOT due to pronunciation factors, and apparently not even to the sound itself in any way other than the fact that there IS sound being recorded. This popping is only present while sound is being recorded, during silence it disappears. Have already tried different settings on project rate, latency, input volume (and there is NO clipping -- the volume remains well below the threshold, and the recording is not distorted but rather sounds good, except for said popping), reinstalling, and nothing has made the slightest difference.
Any Ideas?

Re: Popping NOT due to clipping
Which Audacity are you using? Sometimes upgrading or downgrading from your selected version helps. 1.3.10 is out and new.
How did you reinstall Audacity? If you deleted the program and put a new one in, you did it wrong. All that's needed is delete the Preferences file and Audacity will start from first birthday the next time you start it. You know you succeeded when it asks you English? when you start.

Kjohan----please see my posting "Static on Recordings"...I think we have the same issue, just described differently. By any chance do you have an intregrated sound card?
Re: Popping NOT due to clipping
I have tried 1.3.10, 1.2.6, and even 1.3.7 just to cover all the bases. The problem persisted the same with each. My sound card IS integrated, but I'm not sure why that would be a problem when Window's sound recorder records beautifully. Maybe I'll try other recorders and get a better comparison.
Re: Popping NOT due to clipping
I think Windows Sound Recorder records at a maximum of 44100Hz 16bit. Audacity has a higher quality default setting of 44100/32.
Try going to "Edit menu > Preferences > Quality" and setting the default setting to 44100 Hz / 16 bit.

Re: Popping NOT due to clipping
Thanks for the idea -- just tried it (and various other quality settings) and no difference.

Re: Popping NOT due to clipping
Did you restart Audacity at each change? Sometimes system settings don't stick until you do that.
Maybe it's not a record problem. Can you play music in audacity you didn't try to capture?
Can you play that...
