will not record in stereo

I have checked wires, program set in stereo all the way. Cords are stereo but can only connect from headphone to mic. Headphones show stereo sounds comming out of stereo but Audacity shows the same pattern in both channels and replay is in mono. Any suggestions?

You are, almost without doubt, trying to smash a powerful, line-level, Stereo signal into the Mic-In of your laptop which is expecting a tiny, delicate,
Mono signal.
You can get a real Stereo Line-In on your large deskside PC or almost any Mac, but not a Windows laptop.
