Using windows XP, and audacity 1.3.9 -- Want to export a recorded piece as a .wav file. but when I open the File Menu, and click on Export, program goes right to making a label or being able to change where it is stored (i.e. I like to put the recorded piece into "My Music") and does not give the choice of exporting as a .wav file. A friend, who introduced me to Audacity, says he has the 1.2.6 version and it works fine. I would like to get that version but can not find it on your site. All the choices for downloading start out with 'download 1.2.6', but when I click the final download choice, it switches to 1.3.9 version. Want to make recordings of my sons playing piano for grandparents for christmas. Hopeing to get resolution quickly or can you suggest an alternative? Thank you.

In Audacity 1.3.9, a Metadata Editor appears (for entering embedded track information) after you click File > Export. This point is noted in the 1.3.9 Release Notes:

After the Metadata Editor appears, just click [OK] if you do not want to enter Metadata and the Export dialogue will appear:

If you do not use metadata, you can go to the Libraries tab of Preferences and uncheck "Show Metadata Editor prior to export step". Then the export commands will go straight to the Export dialogue. Preferences are at the bottom of the Edit menu. In the next 1.3.10 Release of Audacity,
which should be out in a day or two, the metadata window will follow the export window instead of preceding it.

The SourceForge download for 1.2.6 can get confusing. The download is correct but if it does not start, click "Direct Link". Or here is another link to the same file:

Audacity 1.3.9 is *much* better than the old 1.2.6 version so I would suggest that you stick with this (until the next release comes out, then you may want to update - it's free of course )

So you have your recording...

1) For best compatibility with other software, look to the "Project Rate" box in the lower left corner of the main Audacity window and set it to 44100 (if it's not already set at that)
2) Click on "File menu > Export"
3) Navigate to where you want to export the WAV file to (for example "My Music") and type in a file name (for example piano-01)
If not already selected, click on the Filr type button and select "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM"
4) Click on the "Save" button
5) If the "Metadata Editor" pops up, click "OK"

That's it.

You can stop the Metadata Editor from popping up each time by going to "Edit menu > Preferences > Import/Export" and uncheck the "Show Metadata Editor ..." option.
