lose sound

I loaded Audacity to my Windows XP 5.1.2600.
It works fine after setting the preferences, but now no other music or sounds work.
Can I set it up so both work?
If not, how do I get it back to getting the music & sounds on the PC to work?

Are you using a USB audio device (turntable/microphone/sound card)?

Yes, it is a USB connected turntable.

The simplest way to get the sound back is to shut down the computer, disconnect the turntable and reboot.
A better way to fix the problem is to go into the Windows Control Panel and in "Sounds and Audio Devices" set the default recording and playback devices to your sound card (Windows automatically sets them to the USB turntable, which is useless because the turntable cannot play back audio from the computer).
You then need to go into Audacity Preferences (Edit menu > Preferences) and on the "Devices" tab set the recording device to the USB turntable and the playback device to your sound card.

Thanks, that worked!
