Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

You need to tell Audacity where the Lame library is.

Click on Edit > Preferences, and in the Preferences window click "Libraries".
Click on MP3 Library > Locate, and browse to the folder the Lame library is in. Click OK to store the preference.

I've tried all the steps, including those on the LAME installation page: deleted old libraries, deleted the audaciti.cfg file etc. still it can't find the library.
At last I deleted everything, uninstalled Audacity, removed all directories and started all over. Still it can't find the library... :-(
I haven't got a single clue! Anyone who can help?

Can you find the Lame library (lame_enc.dll) with Windows Explorer?

Once you've found it, make a note of where it is. Then in the "Locate Lame"window (which you got to by clicking Edit > Preferences > Libraries > MP3 Library Locate) click Browse and go to that location.
Double-click on the lame_enc.dll file, and then click OK in the "Locat e Lame" window.

I find the easiest way is:
Download the ZIP version (for Windows) from this page: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar
Extract the contents of the zip file into your Audacity folder (which is in "Program Files").
Open up Preferences (from the Edit menu) and on the "File Formats" page, click on the "Find Library" button.

I shall be more precise, I was a bit in a hurry yesterday......
By default, the LAME encoder is in c:program fileslame for audacity. So, from within the find library dialog box I go there to find the library, which actually is there. But when I try to load the file, nothing happens. It still says "library not found"

So in Windows Explorer I go to c:documents and settingsownerapplication dataaudacity and open the audacity.cfg file. The above mentioned path is in the file.
I delete the lines (and later the complete cfg file) and start all over. Still no luck.

The FFMPEG loads directly in one try.

To even make it more confusing: I installed 1.3.10 on another computer running XP: no problems....

I don't know why but this seems to happen for a small minority of users. In nearly all of those cases, using the ZIP version of Lame instead and putting it in the Audacity program folder (as described in my previous post) does the trick. Give it a go and let us know how you get on. Good luck :)
