If you are having problems, reduce the gain on each track and mix at a lower level. When you mix the tracks down you can compensate and bring the volume up to normal using compression on the mix without that nasty distortion!

Tip for compression/distortion problems
I kept having trouble with distortion when using compression. The individual tracks sounded fine, but played together, distortion city. I figured out that it was just too much audio and when I lowered the gain on the individual tracks, the distortion went away.
If you are having problems, reduce the gain on each track and mix at a lower level. When you mix the tracks down you can compensate and bring the volume up to normal using compression on the mix without that nasty distortion!
