Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

How do you do Noise Removal on a phone recording?

Post by robls99 » Wed Nov 25, 2009 5:21 am

I notice the Audacity Manual has a section on Noise Removal and a search of the forum shows several topics that mention NR.

However, after looking thru the Index and Tutorial I can't find anything on NR or how to get into the NR window they show in the Manual.

I want to remove the constant hum on a phone recording.

What's the easiest way to do it in 1.3.9.

You will two passes at this:

1) Find a short section of the recording which is "silent" apart from the hum and use Noise Removal to Get Noise Profile

2) Select the whole recording - use CTRL-A and then re-use Noise Removal to effect Step 2 - I would start out with the default parameters.

Test - and if ok then home and dry, else Undo the Noise removal and start over agin.

I would strongly recommend exporting a copy of the raw recording as a WAV file before you start. This is your unedited safety copy that you can always go back to if you screw up the editing ....

For a detailed write up, click on the "Tutorials" link at the top of this page.

About half way down that page is a link "Noise Removal for removing steady noise like hum and hiss from all types of audio".
