Mic sounds too loud

Hi, I've had a glance through the forum and couldnt see anything on this.
So I'm using Vista, and trying to record both audio and stuff im saying through a mic, at the same time.
It;s a pretty decent mic and not a pc one. It worked wonderfully on the XP machine.
Now, in order to get a decent volume recorded through it, I have to turn the mic vol up to 100 and the boost up to max. This just gives the sound of it up too loud, yet when I talk, It doesn't sound as loud as it should...
Any ideas?
