Audacity will not let me click Preferences without crashing.

I'm trying to get Audacity 1.3.9 to look for some VSTs that I put into the plug-in folder but when I go to click "preferences"
and go through the process I read about on here, it just crashes.
Anyone else have this problem or does anyone know how to fix this?

Please be more specific. What computer? what OS? What VST effects are you trying to add? How many at once?
Is this what you're trying to do?
1) Edit > Preferences go to Effects tab, check "Rescan for VST effects"
2) Exit Audacity
3) Start Audacity
At this point, what exactly happens? What error message to you get, exactly?
This has been reported before and the developers are working on it. Your report could help track this down.

If you are on Vista, make sure that you have a recording device enabled on your computer:
