Dear Mr. Steve,

I figured out how to highlight a very small section for both the track and label to insert a silence for both simultaneously - but it shifted / misaligned everything after it, once I readjusted the label to include the new silence in the track.

What is your advice, please? (deep sigh).

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ayesha

Save your project (possibly save a back-up copy with a new name if you have plenty of free disk space.

Have a practice with this before you try it on the real project.

1) Import or record a short track.
2) Split the track into a number of bits in the normal way.
3) Add some labels
4) Click on the audio track to set the playback cursor
5) Press SHIFT+END (this will highlight the track from the playback position to the end of the track).
6) Press the DOWN cursor key (moves "focus" to the label track)
7) Press the ENTER key (highlights the label track in addition to the audio track)
8) Select the Time Shift tool (shortcut is the f5 key)
9) Drag the selected audio clips AND the labels to where you want them.

Does that do it for you?

Did we mention that Ctrl+i will put a split in the track at the playback position?

Dear StevetheFiddle,

I just now saw your response because I must have not checked the "notify me" box before.

I attempted your suggestions and made screen shots - but I don't know how to embed the images within the post itself?

I noticed the button "Img" above this text box I am typing in - but unsure how to actually use it? I don't know how to save the screen shot as an image. What do you recommend please because I think it is easier for you to see what I am referring to. And it won't let me upload an attachment with .docx extension?

Thank you for your patience and help.

Dear SteveTheFiddle,

I thought about using 1.2.6 to access the linking feature again - however, it won't work on Windows 7 platform:

"Windows® 7 is the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, officially released on October 22, 2009. It is based on the previous Vista version of Windows. Audacity's support for Windows 7 is currently provisional and is being developed in the Beta 1.3 series of releases.

Please use the current Audacity Beta version for Windows 7, not the 1.2.6 Stable version. This page outlines computer requirements and possible issues using Audacity 1.3 with Windows 7.

So, I will have to figure out how to fix this issue with the version I am using: Audacity 1.3.12 beta unicode, that I just upgraded from 1.3.11 beta:

April 01, 2010: Audacity 1.3.12 released, and Audacity book release from PACKT Publishing
The Audacity Team is pleased to announce the release of Audacity 1.3.12 (Beta) for Windows, Mac and Linux/Unix. There are some important bug fixes and improvements, especially for dragging and synchronization of labels.

Also, it seems that in version 1.3.10 beta is when the linking was disabled:

So, I am trying to find a work around until it is enabled again. I did go ahead export 309 -mp3 files to work with linking them to the corresponding jpegs in the flashcard program. And the soundclips that need those extra silences inserted, have a distinct "clicking" sound at the point where the "split" occurs - which is annoying to hear - so I will need to figure out how to remedy this for the few the ~ 10 soundclips that it occurs with. And in the future, be sure to triple check my work as I am working on it!!!

Dear SteveTheFiddle,

I think I figured out a solution! :D Using the "saved as" version of the original track to practice on:

1. I created a new stereo track and copied the section where two sound clips are one wavelength (because there was no distinct breath in between the pronunciation of two different sounds) from the original track (on top) and pasted it in the newly created stereo track (below it).

2. I then figured out how to add a new label track to the new stereo track (bottom track).

3. I then successfully inserted the silences and created the labels so that there are 250 milliseconds before and after each sound clip for the bottom track.

4. I then "saved as" version iii; and deleted the original soundtrack and label track (on top); so I could successfully export multiple labels as mp3 of the newly adjusted sound clips with inserted silences.

I am happy and relieved that I am almost done with this particular lesson track.

Please let me know if you have other ideas of how to work around this issue until the linking is enabled again.

Thank you!!!
