Feedbcak on recordings

My wife is converting our old vinyl, but recently every recording made has enormous amounts of feedback on it

I have tried re-installing both the production and beta versions of Audacity with the same result. I have also re-installed the RealTek HD audio driver

The computer is running WinXP Pro with the RealTek HD audio driver and Audacity 1.2.6

With Audacity running, I am able to listen to the vinyl, but once recording starts, so does the feedback

Can anyone please assist?

cheers :)

You can get feedback during a capture by having the speakers up so loud that they interfere with the needle and cartridge. I have personally done that. But much more likely is you're not recording what you think you are.

Mess about in the Windows Control Panel and make sure you're not recording Mix-Out or What-U-Hear instead of the turntable.

Also, see if plugging in headphones instead of the built-in speakers helps. It's always risky to have a live pickup device and speakers running at the same time.

How? With a USB turntable? If so, go into Audacity Preferences from the Edit menu and check that the recording device is set to USB. For other potential issues with USB turntables see here: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 203#p56203
