recordings "falling behind"

i seem to have a really hopeless problem.. its sort of like latency.. but its not at the same time. ive watched videos on it and spent like an hour trying to fix this.. but it wont budge.

when i record a guitar track over another one... it starts out fine, as im recording i am spot on with the original track but when i listen to it.. the track lags as it goes on more and more. so what i did was went to the end of the track and did the math on how far i was behind, then i put it on my negative latency option. the same thing happened, so i tried it positive. ive tried so many different things and this "progressive lag" in my tracks sucks..

i hope im just being stupid and doing something wrong, because this is really upsetting.

help anyone?

The most common cause of a miss between playback and record speed is the sound card. The Electronics that make the digital sound from your voice and the electronics that play it back are different. Unless you're a musician, you'll go through life never knowing they're different.

Latency is the same miss all the way through the song. Yours is broken.

I don't remember what the fix is for this, but I think it's to send your sound through an external USB sound card instead of your internal one.

As Koz says, it is not uncommon to have some degree of drift between recording speed and playback speed, but this is mostly with low end and on-board sound cards. The problem can sometimes be improved by using a different default sample rate (which you set in Edit menu > Preferences > Quality) - sometimes the sound card will behave better at 44100, other cards at 48000. Some users have reported the problem being fixed by updating their sound card drivers.
