16/44100 stereo, and set your CD burning program to "Audio CD".
Use CDR and not CDRW.

The developers have addressed this issue and it should now be fixed in the latest code (November 5th).
I've tested it on Linux and it is now working correctly.
The fix should come through to the next Nightly versions for Mac and Windows.

Thank you!
Is there a way, when recording or listening, to have the current location of the music remain at the center of the screen, allowing the time to scroll by, rather than traveling left-to-right, then jumping back to the left?
I have looked for this setting and can't find it.
Thanks again, I would be glad to send you a disc full of music.
ps - when are you looking to release the next full stable version?

Currently, no.
I have added your vote for this on the feature request page

I think the original date was May 2007!
I think the current target date is December 2009.
We've been saying "very soon" for a long time now, but the developers are now exclusively working on releasing the stable version and avoiding any sidetracks into new features.

Steve -
You have been so nice and helpful, I really appreciate it.
I am a well-educated guy, but I am not up on the specialized terminology of this stuff.
I just quickly ran through the link you gave me, and, honestly, I can't see it. You obviously understood what I was talking about, when I clumsily asked my question.
What is this operation/feature/view/setting called, technically, and where would I look for such a thing?
thanks again, Harry

In the "Interface Extensions" part:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... Extensions
Track scrolling on Playback: Keep the cursor in one place but move the track - gives smooth visual playback without continual cursor back and forth (7 votes)
You are vote number 7.
(I think your description was very clear).
Because it is listed on the Feature Request page does not mean that it will be implemented any time soon, but it does mean that the developers are aware of it and know there is some interest in the feature. There will be no new features until Audacity 2.0 stable is released as that the currently the overriding priority.
