I can think of plenty of other things to get more annoyed about
Personally I've never found this a problem, but I'll see if I can find out anything about it.

In a stereo file, you can't as it's currently implemented. A space and "1" is added to a stereo file, and when you split the stereo track, space and "1" is visible in both channels. There is no "1" added for a mono file.
The real point this was done was for importing multi-channel files. If you import such a file, each mono channel will have a space and a number added. So in a 5:1 file for example, the first mono channel has a "1" appended and the last has a "6".
I'd agree the appended number is superfluous for a regular mono or (unsplit) stereo file. It's an annoyance where the file name is based on a number in the first place. The idea proposed was that only files with more than two channels would have a number added, but this didn't happen. And If we have data appended when splitting a stereo track, the number should not be identical but 1 for left, 2 for right, or better (L) and (R) to avoid confusion with multi-channel files.
