Loud Crackling

This is my first attempt at using Audacity and using my M-Audio MobilePre USB. I am monitoring through the headphone out of the MobilePre. Whenever I am playing back a track or even recording a track, I get a very loud crackling noise that is not present in the moniter when Audacity is not performing any action. Playback and Recording devices are both set to the MobilePre. Its very loud and makes it impossible to do any recording.

M-Audio equipment tends to use ASIO software drivers. Audacity tends to not because they're a fee-based license. They cost money.

If the unit has Windows drives, too, then Audacity should fall right in line. If not, then your choices are to compile Audacity yourself with ASIO support, or use another software program.

Is it possible that it might be an IRQ conflict? Just reading off of the M-Audio site.

Unfortunately, I'm at work right now, but I'll see if I can test this tonight.

If you need to worry about Interrupt Requests, you got a lot more problems than just crackling. If the unit is using ASIO drivers, then anything you do will be unstable if it works at all. It's possible to compile Audacity with internal ASIO support, but you have to do it. It can't come from the "factory" like that, any more than it can come with built-in MP3 coders and for the same reason.

Is that relatively easy to do like it was to install Lame for the .mp3 encoding?
