Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

1.3.9 Nightmare - no thanks to myself!

Post by orgelquaeler » Sun Sep 13, 2009 3:34 am

I downloaded and installed 1.3.9 on my computer, which already had 1.3.4 installed on it. I installed it in a different directory in order to be able to use 3.4 which I already knew was stable enough for me. There was some confusion with the 3.4 install, so I uninstalled 3.4 and re-installed it, again in it's own directory.

I then opened up a 45 minute stereo file in 3.9, and applied the "Remove Tone" Filter. The program spontaneously closed halfway through the processing of this filter.

I restarted my computer, then opened 3.9. The "Recovery" dialog box popped up and I opted to recover the file. I tried to apply the filter again, but my computer nearly froze and I could barely open the Task Manager to force a close of Audacity. I opened the file again using Audacity. I chose to recover the file again, and this time immediately exported it as a WAV, and stupidly chose to overwrite the original file. I closed Audacity, then opened my file again to find it had written 45 minutes of blank space. I re-installed Audacity 1.3.9, tried saving a file, and everything seems to work now.

Was 3.9 affected by my re-installing of 1.3.4 in another directory as a result of system files? Will having installed 3.9 affect the installation of 3.4?

I am running Windows XP pro, SP3 with a Pentium Dual Core 1.8GHz and 2 GB RAM.

It shouldnt affect - I have 1.3.7 1.3.8 and 1.3.9 (and 1.2.6) on both my PCs, one a laptop the other a desktop and both run any of these versions with no problems. I believe that both of your 1.3 versions will share the same Audacity configuration file (where your preferences settings are stored).

What is this "Remove Tone" Filter?
I don't see it in my Audacity 1.3.9 installation and I don't remember seeing it in any earlier versions of Audacity.

I understand why you like Audacity 1.3.4, it is still one of my favourite releases as it is rock-solid-stable on my old XP machine (though it does lack some features of later versions).

As waxcylinder has said, they will share the same Preferences settings unless you set them up to use "Portable Settings".
See here for details of how to do this: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... e_Audacity

Also, they will probably share the same temp folder unless you manually change that from the Audacity Preferences window (Edit menu > Preferences). If you want to run the two versions independently of each other then it would probably be best to set them to use different temp folders.
