1.3.8 Truncate Silence Issue

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

1.3.8 Truncate Silence Issue

Post by arniec » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:42 pm

I have another issue with the new version.

Situation: Stereo track, lots of silence. Tried Truncate Silence (which is what I've done for many versions of Audacity now). The status bar appears telling me it is truncating, but it is not. I have tested several settings, and no matter what settings I use the track remains unchanged.

I then started using the Preview button. With Preview the silence is gone, however I have no way to apply the effect.

For testing purposes I also tried this on a mono track to no avail.

I have tried rebooting my system, etc. and tried this on several Audacity projects.

I think for this one my only workaround is to have an older copy of Audacity installed in which I can truncate my tracks, then move them to the new version, unless someone else has an idea.

Thanks.

Can you please test this on the same project (a copy of the same project) with 1.3.8 and with one of the older 1.3s - and report results back.

The developers are working hard at the moment to hoover up as many 1.3 bugs as possible prior to getting some potential Release Candidates out the door prior to shippping 2.0 (hopefully later this year).

I opened the exact same project in 1.3.6 and used Truncate Silence. It worked just fine.

So it's something in 1.3.8 I think. And a note: 1.3.8 is the first time it has all those other settings. I spent literally an hour messing with the settings thinking perhaps I just had one of the new settings wrong, but when I did Preview I realized it was previewing per my settings and working correctly, but the final track was never being touched.

Ohhh...2.0...this excites me :)

The Audacity 1.3.7 > 1.3.8 transition was difficult. There were some very serious changes to the way Audacity does things and there were some surprises. I use 1.3.7 for production.

I've just emailed Gale to see if the developers can take a look at this to ascertain if it is indeed a bug.

As it stands, I cannot replicate the issue using our 1.3.9 Release Candidate on an arbitrary 3-minute stereo pop track (the only track in the project) in which I added three absolute silences of various lengths in excess of one second then truncated at default settings:
Min 200, max 1000, compression 4:1, -40 dB.

However it's known that in 1.3.8 if you have another track in the project without silence, even if that other track is not selected, Truncate Silence won't work. Either nothing will happen (no progress dialogue if you click OK without previewing), or if you preview, the effect will be heard in the preview and a progress dialogue will (usually) appear when clicking OK, but the effect won't be applied to the waveform.

So if you have other tracks in the project, remove them and truncate should work. If you only have one track and truncate does not work in 1.3.9rc1, please tell us the exact settings in Truncate Silence and send the file to a free file transfer service such as:
http://www.yousendit.com/
http://www.sendspace.com/

and post the web address here where we can download it.

There may still be issues to be fixed running Truncate Silence on multiple tracks, but the above issue (truncate not working on one selected track when there are other unselected tracks without silence), should now be fixed when 1.3.9 comes out.
