I have just installed the 64-bit version of Windows 7 in a separate partition as a test system.

I then installed Audacity 1.3.8. Before the application actually appeared on screen, I got this error message:

Audacity error on first run: failed to load shared library C:program files (x86)Windows photo viewerimagingengine.dll (error 126, the specified module could not be found).

I went past the error and briefly used a few effects as a test on a random mp3 and it seemed to work ok, although I did not save and listen to playback.

Questions:

What are the known issues with any version of Audacity and Windows 7 64-bit, or for that matter Vista 64-bit?

What is the significance of the above error over the longer term?

That page you linked to doesn't mention 64-bit at all. Can I assume that no one on the development team has tested 64-bit at all, even informally.

The 64-bit DVDs will be included with all retail purchases of Windows 7, which will be released October 22, so I would think this will be of concern to some users quite soon.

it is quite a possibilty that that is indeed the case. The development team is fairly small, there is only one MAC developr for example, so it is quite possible that Audacity has not been tested in the envirinment you have.

Can I suggest that you report your bug directly to the developers. This page in the Wiki tells youu how to report bugs http://audacityteam.org/contact/

The developers do sometimes visit the forum - and in particular I know that Gale Andrews visits fairly regularly to trawl for bugs, as the developers are trying to tease out as many bugs as possible before moving to the next "Stable Release" 2.0 later this year.

Your feedback to the developers will be welcome. We, the Beta users, are effectively a large part of the testing team. That is the point of beta releases.

I am now just testing 64 bit on a separate partition to see how many of my 35 or so applications will perform well enough on it. I am not committed to it after the next month or so.

When Windows 7 is released in October, I will install the 32-bit version unless I am confident at that time that all my apps will work on 64-bit. There is nothing about 64-bit that makes it mandatory for me, but I guess it is the future and will become more and more prominent over the next couple of years. Eventually, we will be forced into it, but that may be quite a while.

For all I know, Audacity will work OK, but I did get the noted error when on the first run. What it means, I have no idea.

Yeah, that would be correct, although I haven't read Krazy Kat in decades--nor Pogo, another of my favorites. Too caught up in music and these god-forsaken computers.
