To all:
I downloaded 1.3.8 last weekend, and after running the standard installation procedure, Audacity won't run (even from the "Launch Audacity Now" window at the end of the install procedure). I still have 1.3.7 installed, which works well. Any experience from other Vista users?
BTW, I liked the hierarchical effects structure that was in 1.3.6, which I unfortunately uninstalled and deleted, and it looked like this might be back in 1.3.8.
One other issue--when I "generate silence" while zoomed in to a fairly granular level, as soon as I click OK, the view re-sizes into fully zoomed-out. Previous versions didn't do this--if it's a preferences issue, I haven't been able to find it. I have 1.3.7 installed on an external hard drive, and this one doesn't do this, and it's technically the same version (though not necessarily downloaded or installed at the same time).

Re: 1.3.8 on Vista home premium
There was a problem with the download last weekend which the developers appear to have fixed now. You may need to re-install 1.3.8 - see this thread http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 24&t=11706BDJones wrote: I downloaded 1.3.8 last weekend, and after running the standard installation procedure, Audacity won't run (even from the "Launch Audacity Now" window at the end of the install procedure). The developers were toying with making this a settable interface option in Preferences (following compllaints from several users when the hierarchiacal structure introduced in 1.3.6 was removed in 1.3.7) but so far as I can see in 1.3.8 they have not yet done this. Personally, I prefer the long list rather than the hierarchy as it uses less to clicks to operate.BDJones wrote: I liked the hierarchical effects structure that was in 1.3.6, which I unfortunately uninstalled and deleted, and it looked like this might be back in 1.3.8.
This is a known issue which also happened in 1.3.7 - there have been threads about this on he forum.BDJones wrote: One other issue--when I "generate silence" while zoomed in to a fairly granular level, as soon as I click OK, the view re-sizes into fully zoomed-out. This came up recently on the developers mailing list:waxcylinder wrote:The developers were toying with making this a settable interface option in Preferences (following compllaints from several users when the hierarchiacal structure introduced in 1.3.6 was removed in 1.3.7) but so far as I can see in 1.3.8 they have not yet done this. to turn it off and on, and I believe it would be off by default
(unless there was some way to turn it on automatically
if more than a given number of effects were detected).
I'm pretty sure a higher proportion of users don't use
large numbers of effects than do - especially novices.
If Effect Categories was on by default in 2.0 there would
be far too many complaints because of the increased
navigation needed (though I admit part of the problem
in 1.3.6 was that common effects like Noise Removal were
buried too far inside the tree).
Don't see why not, given it should work on all three> However I notice that the "Nyquist Prompt" is still

platforms.

Thanks to everyone who responded to what developed into many threads. I'll try reinstalling and launching this evening. BTW, for those who might be interested, I use Audacity as my multi-track recorder...You can hear the results at http://www.myspace.com/yourbasicbluedenimbootponies. I'll let you know how the reload/relaunch works.
