Unhandled Exception Won't Allow Playback

I opened up audacity beta like usual, went to 'recent files' and selected the song I've been working on. All of a sudden, whenever I press play on the dock control toolbar to make sure something sounds correct, I get this message:
"An unhandled exception occurred. Press "Abort" to terminate the program, "Retry" to exit the program normally and "Ignore" to try to continue.
I need to finish this song. Could someone please help? Thanks.

Oh, and if it helps, I'm using Windows Vista 32.
- Another interesting point I just noticed, when I open up audacity and select the project I want from 'recent files', all the tracks have been selected already.

Where is the project .AUP file?
Where is the project data folder?
Can you open the file by double clicking on the .aup file?

The .aup file is located in:
C:UsersChayseDesktopDesktop 2009Audacity Projects
where I have always located both 1.2 and 1.3 versions of audacity files, and I've never had any problems with this before. The data folder for the .aup file I was working on is in the same directory.
I try to open the project from the .aup file, however when I select 'Open with' and select the 1.3 version of audacity, windows still opens it with the old one, possibly because the two .exes have the same name. I don't know if changing them will help, but I don't want to because of other effects it may have.
All other previous projects in audacity 1.3 appear to be working fine.
Anyway, hope that answers your questions. Thanks.

That shouldn't happen, you should be able to choose whether to open in 1.2 or 1.3.
Do you actually need to have Audacity 1.2 installed?
Which version of Audacity 1.3 do you have (look in the "Help > About Audacity").

Hmm, sounds like the project is broken in some way. How big a project is it?

Hey,
I have 1.3.7 of audacity beta installed, but I don't need the other one installed, at least right now. So I'll uninstall it and see if I can open the project normally.
Hmmm... this very odd. I've uninstalled the old version, but when I click on an .aup file to tell it to open with the new version, I browse to the correct folder, select audacity.exe... and GOOGLE CHROME comes up off all things. I try going back into browsing for program, select audacity again, and still, no audacity comes up, just Google Chrome. So weird.
I can still open up Audacity 1.3.7 through the start menu though.
The project is big enough that I don't want to have to start it again, as I had some guitar in there and whatnot that was exactly how I wanted it. What I want to know at this stage is, is there anyway of just copying over all the audio files from the broken project, and just pasting them onto a new one, yet still keep their start and stop points for each track, so everything remains in time?
Thanks.

Are you able to open the project? I get the impression that it opens but will not play.
Can you open the project and save it with a different name?

If you haven't already, try starting Audacity 1.3.8 from the desktop icon, then use the Menu->File->Open to open the project. Opening something by double-clicking the file name, or using the right-click menu ends up going thru several layers of Registry stuff before it can determine for sure which program to run. Opening via the Audacity menu bypasses all that registry stuff, which the uninstall probably messed up somehow.

Yes, I can open the project fine. But I can't play or record, I just get the message that I describe in my first post. After that though, when I click the play button it just doesn't work, you can hit it as many times as you like. Same with the record button.
I tried saving under a different file name earlier, but I couldn't play that one either.

Yeah, tried this. It's the usual way I open up audacity anyway, that or from the 'recent files' list. Doesn't work unfortunately.

Some good news. I can copy tracks and paste them in a new project and play them, they work fine. Is there anyway of doing a mass copy without having to realign everything?
