I'm trying to record from line in, but am getting Windows XP's feedback sounds in the stream. Things like clicking in IE or file explorer. I understand many people want to record other streams that are within their machine, but I really don't. It seems like there should be a way to just record the physical line in jack and not have to turn down/off the alerts or avoid the computer until recording is finished.
These are my four input options, none seem to avoid this problem:
MME: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input
MME: Realtek AC97 Audio
Windows DirectSound - Realtek AC97 Audio
Windows DirectSound - Primary Sound Capture
Don't want windows alert sounds?

Re: Don't want windows alert sounds?
Launching Audacity cold and clicking inside the red record meters causes them to go into monitor mode. They will bounce to the music. Then open up the Windows control panels and start turning things off until it goes away. It's not unusual to find you're in the wrong panel because you have everything off and the sound is still there. In earlier Windows, there were actually two separate panels and you could tune record and playback separately. Not any more.

Re: Don't want windows alert sounds?
So y'all are saying there is no way for audacity to separate the streams; that muting it by fiddling in windows is the only option.
Re: Don't want windows alert sounds?
If your sound card is set to record "Stereo Mix" then it will send a mix of ALL sounds on your computer to Audacity. It's up to you to instruct your sound card which audio input you want to use. You do that with the "Windows Mixer". On XP you can usually access the Windows Mixer by double clicking on the loudspeaker icon near the system clock, but on Vista, because of its abysmal sound architecture it is usually better to go through the Windows Control Panel so that you can enable options that Vista decides to hide.
