Using Dell inspiron 1300 laptop with XP
I can record using a lead from my headphone socket to my mic socket with no problem. Ideally I wish to hear what I am recording.
I can import a file and play ok
Unable to get Audacity to receive output signals meters are blank. I can adjust the volume in Audacity line while stream is playing ok.
The problem maybe with my windows set up
I have checked the Sound and devices they are ok and set the speakers to laptop speakers.
Could BBC iplayer be blocking recording via some clever filters
Thanks in advance
XP set up to record web site radio streaming BBC iplayer

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

If you need to record the computer's speaker feed, then you need to select Mix-Out or What-U-Hear in the Windows control panels....
Windows Control Panel

Some of the newer machines come without this setting. In that case, your only options are Total Recorder or other software package, or the jumper cable.
The jumper has its own problems. If your machine has a real Mic-In (like most PC laptops). It's mono, not stereo. Worse, it's Left only and likely to be distorted.
