Extracting vocal from song

Post by Mike Hunt » Fri Jun 12, 2009 9:29 pm

Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to extract the vocal of a song. I have both a normal and instrumental version of the song, and both are in FLAC. Is there a way to do it?

Maybe. I don't think the instrumental will do you any good. Most of the time this doesn't work all that well because there is a long list of failure rules. For example, if the show is in mono, you're automatically dead.

These are the known removal and isolation tools...

I know someone who extracted the vocal from a song by using the instrumental version. I even have the vocal file. It isn't very good, but I suspect it was because he was using mp3 files, and I might do better with FLAC. He was using Cool Edit or something, but surely it most also be possible with Audacity?

If the two files are the exact same tracks with the only difference being the vocal in one, then you can mount both of them on separate tracks one above the other, flip one over and add them. Effect > Invert. Export a WAV file and the orchestration should be gone.

The failure rules for this process are great, too. They can't be about the same. If they're not bit for bit copies of each other, they will not cancel out. Including timing. If one is the slightest bit before or after the other; fail. You can zoom in Control-E repeatedly until you see the actual waves of the music. Before you invert, they should exactly match up.

Where did you get orchestration and full vocal for the same performance?

Um, could you please be a little more specific to what I should do? I'm still an Audacity newbie.. How do I flip one over and the other thing?

Thank you for your help but I still don't understand... Should I open both tracks, invert the instrumental version, and then play both? That doesn't change anything..

Edit: Wait, I think I got it.. Just needed to shift it around a bit...

Last Edit: Yep, I got it. It's not perfectly clean, but it's usable. Thanks everybody

I don't think it will change the waveforms any, but when you play the composite track, the voice should be the only thing left.

Before you inverted one track, select one short segment with music only and zoom way in multiple times until you can see the individual up and down motion of the waves. Are they the same?

We went a little too fast there. Is it a stereo show?

Got any tips to how I can clean it up? I've tried "Noise Removal" but I don't think I can figure it out..

You can't wander off and you need to start answering the questions we're asking. Where did you get the two tracks and is it a stereo show?
