I am having a problem with my Audacity 1.3.7 install: my configuration information is remembered and correctly used by Audacity -- *except* for lame_enc.dll. The correct info is saved in my audacity.cfg file after I have exited (even the correct path for my lame_enc.dll), but the software insists that the MP3 export library is not found. I have an MSI Wind U100 with an Intel Atom 1.6G, 1G RAM, 160G HDD (so no space or memory problems), running Windows XP Home SP3.
I have followed http://www.audacityteam.org/manual/inde ... ns#winlame exactly line by line, used the exact downloads. erased the [MP3] lines (because I had installed Audacity 1.2.6 previously -- which had the same problem), etc.
What happens is that Audacity will even remember the "C:Program FilesLame for Audacitylame_enc.dll" both when I have just set it and when I have reopened the program. But even as I click "OK," Audacity is saying "MP3 Library Version: MP3 export library not found." It is as if it "sees" it but does not "count" it.
I believe that the problem lies in something with XP SP3 because on the same day I borrowed a friend's HP laptop with XP SP2 and downloaded all the same files, and everything worked correctly "out of the box" without my having to do anything. It even had lame_enc.dll correctly configured before I opened Audacity (of course I manually re-did the browse to verify). I am willing to bet that the other folks who reported as-yet-unsolvable problems with configuring their lame_enc.dll in XP were XP SP3
I have tried Audacity 1.2.6 as well, with the same problem. Finally, I even tried crazy ideas like copying the Application DataAudacity folder to the "All Users" or "Default User" hierarchy because this feels like the same flavour of problem I ditched Vista for; and Vista changed the rules about which various places in the hierarchy that software had to be in order to run correctly.
On my machine (XP SP 3) I have uninstalled and manually deleted the few remaining files and directories countless times, and am wondering at this point if I should do a search and blow away anything labeled "audacity" or "lame" in the registry before my next attempt.

Re: Audacity 1.3.7 not using my lame_enc.dll
In thinking further about this, I am wondering if it might correlate with that normally-non-problematic "publisher could not be verified" warning -- there might be somewhere in which I have to "mark" it as "safe" perhaps in the registry or if there is a list of "safe publishers" in the Internet Options or etc. Have been unable to ascertain whom XP considers to be the "publisher"
Re: Audacity 1.3.7 not using my lame_enc.dll
In a similar forum thread, one of the Audacity developers gave this advice:
This information was from here: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic ... 442#p40442
He then went on to say that there appears to be an issue for some XP SP3 users and that a new build of Lame has been made which will hopefully fix the problem. It is available here: http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/nf_lame_enc.dllI suggest you reset 1.3 Preferences properly by exiting Audacity, removing all content from audacity.cfg except "NewPrefsInitialized=1" and saving the changes. Then get rid of all copies of lame_enc.dll from your computer and install LAME again.

Re: Audacity 1.3.7 not using my lame_enc.dll
When I was using 1.3.7 it worked fine but now that I installed the 1.3.8 beta I'm having the same problem. I followed all the posted advice RE resetting prefs, etc. but it still will not work.
Additionally, when I go out to the LAME encoder download site I get a 403-Forbidden error (another user in the 1.3.7 install forum mentioned the same prob). I also used the updated .dll linked in this thread with no success.

I've just download the Windows Zip version and the Windows .exe version from here: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/Brett_R wrote:Additionally, when I go out to the LAME encoder download site I get a 403-Forbidden error
If you have trouble downloading them, read the BIG TEXT at the top of the download page.
