Are you using an odd sound system? USB devices? Turntables? Sound cards?

Try resetting Audacity Preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo, and restarting. Audacity defaults don't always get along well with audio hardware.

There have been several postings on this error message by one of the developers. Try using the Search function at the ttop of the forum window - click on the "Advanced Search".

Then in the keywords field type Error opening - and in the Author file type Gale Andrews - -then scroll down and click on the Search button. You should get 5 or so threads to follow. One of these may help you.

Go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O"
You will see 2 dropdown lists - 1 fir the "recording device" and one for the "playback device".
What options are listed and what is selected?

Click on the "Help" menu and select "Audio Device Info..."
Copy the information from there and paste it into your reply.

So you can see the blue waveform in the track when you import the MP3 and it plays?
You use vocal remover and the blue waveform turns into a flat blue line and no longer plays?
If so, then the original file was mono (identical in both left and right channels). Vocal removal only works on stereo files, and only works if the vocal is dead centre in the stereo mix and the other instruments are panned left/right.
