Installed Audacity but no sound

I have just insatlled audacity 1.2.6 and I now have no sound through computer - running windows XP. I cannot get sound playing files through either media player or iTunes?????

Did you leave out a step? ...installed Audacity 1.2.6 and tried to record internet audio and now have no sound through computer?

Windows Sound Control Panel is frequently the root of problems like this.

Or are you by any chance using a USB devive (TT or mic) ?

I have a similar problem - Audacity just started flat lining two weeks ago. There was no sound being picked up whatsoever. Just a blue flatline. A week ago, it suddenly worked again. And then today, flatline again. Any idea what is going on here? I'm recording the spoken word, and from the same source (microphone). Cords and connections haven't changed.

Similar, but not the same. His dropped dead, yours drops dead when it feels like it. We would just as soon you not piggyback on somebody else's question but start a new one. Now we have to split the answers between you.

Ned should still go into the Windows Control Panels and probably find that Windows is sending his show sound to the wrong place, or one of the sound control modules is turned down or disabled.

Mikel needs to tell us a bunch more about his machine, starting here...

...and going on to the type of microphone and how it's connected. Also, Is there any other USB sound equipment in the system and is there an account for Vonage or Skype?

I still don't know how to start a new thread - not in the help menu or FAQ that I can see.

Anyways, here's the info that was req'd:

Audacity 1.3.2 - beta (Unicode) on Dell Inspiron 600 (laptop) under Windows XP (2002 service pack 3)
laptop has 1.5GHz, 512 MB RAM
