Bug or my mistake?
Ok, I use Audacity beta 1.3 and so far was very satisfied, but recently I noticed a strange problem.
I use audacity to edit a podcast. I have the recording and I am adding to it the introduction and "outro" I do this by importing a mp3 file. So when I add it i also use the fade in and fade out at the beginning and the end of the podcast. After the introduction the podcasts is ok, but at the end (where I have applied the fade out, Audacity swallows the first few letters of the outro. It should sound like "this podcast was recorded..." but I can hear only "...s podcast was recorded"
It seems like the fade out effect is silencing the beginning of the outro.

Re: Bug or my mistake?
Kind of stupid but I found a way out of this. I first do the cutting and fade in fade out and then I import the mp3 file with intro and outro message. Then it works ok. This means that the "fade out" effect does something to the imported mp3 file.
Is this a bug and where should I submit it?

Re: Bug or my mistake?
No it is a bug, I cant use it. Audacity beta simply does do what it shouldn't do...
Re: Bug or my mistake?
There are bugs in Audacity 1.3, but I don't think this is one of them. The current beta version is 1.3.7 and this is the version that you should use.
The fade-in / fade-out effects are applied to all selected tracks.
So you have your music on track 1, then import the intro to track 2, and the outro to track 3.
Select the fade in region on track 1 and apply the fade in effect, then select the fade out region on track 1 and apply the fade out effect. Make sure that only track 1 is selected.
You can toggle the selection of a track by holding down the shift key and left clicking on the track information box at the left end of the track.

From what I know audacity automaticaly applies the effect fade in fade out only on the track which I currently edit, not on all tracks.
Also this problem which occurs seems not to be consistent. Sometimes it does happen other times it doesn't. Also it seems that sometimes when I think its ok, after I export it to mp3 it is not ok (the begining of outro is missing).
But I will try to do the same with 1.3.7 and will report back.
Thank you.
Re: Bug or my mistake?
If you find the same issue on 1.3.7, see if you can produce a step-by-step method to reproduce the fault, then we will be able to investigate further (and escalate the issue to the developers if necessary).smrki wrote:But I will try to do the same with 1.3.7 and will report back.

Re: Bug or my mistake?
Yes the same things happens with 1.3.7 version.
I even manage it to sound ok (when I work on the project), but when I export it to mp3 it gets the error I described above (some sounds are silenced in the second track eith the outro).

Re: Bug or my mistake?
I know it will take some time, but could you give us that step-by-step method - I'd like to try and reproduce the problem.

Re: Bug or my mistake?
There is no such problem with the stable version of the audacity. But its painful to work with the stable (old) version.
And yes it can be reproduced, as it happens almost every time I do the process.

Re: Bug or my mistake?
But we have heard of this before. This kind of thing happens when people try to do precision editing with MP3. "How come Audacity adds silence at the end of my MP3 export?"
It's possible this was a shortcoming in Audacity 1.2. 1.2 sometimes didn't pay attention to what it was doing and it will produce damage occasionally because of that. Audaciy 1.3 was much more strict with the file structures and management. Perversely, that may make MP3 files harder to edit.
