I have a 3gig wav file. is there some workaround enabling me to split it and be able to open the smaller files?

I don't know how Windows handles the file, but WAV file size as far as I know is set in the headers as an unsigned 4 byte integer, which imposes a 4 GB limit (not 2 GB). The problem is that many applications interpret the file length as a signed number, which imposes a 2 GB limit. Are you sure Audacity 1.3.7 cannot open the file complete? If so, you can
split the file into smaller files in Audacity.

I was using 1.3.6 - does that make a difference? When I tried to open the file all I got on the screen was stretch silence lasting about 14 seconds.

Tell us more about this file - what exact format is it? does it play in other applications?

It's a wav file. It won't open in itunes or wmplayer. I left the computer on record by accident - that's why the file is 3 gig.

I suspect that the file is corrupt.

Recorded by what application - Audacity 1.3.6? Try 1.3.7 - I know people have opened WAVs up to 4 GB in it (if they are not corrupt).
