Hello; recently downloaded Unstable, and it's quite living up to its name! I'm using a Vista... which I'm convinced is part of the problem. My computer is XP, but I don't have access to it right now.
I cannot import ANY type of audio, even the sample music that came with the damn computer. The error message is "Audacity recognized the WAV file but cannot import it". This occurs with everything I try to import, and if that doesn't happen Audacity crashes completely. I tried downloading the FFMpeg library program but it does the very same thing - "cannot import".
The real kicker is, the original did the very same thing! Is there some horrible Vista curse that nobody told me about and isn't in the FAQ? Please help. I'd really like to record SOMETHING this year.
Can't do ANYTHING. Seriously. Not anything.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Not Vista, more like Windows®
Windows does everything in Windows Media which is highly compressed h.264/MPEG4 audio streams. Audacity has no idea what to do with that.

Download the 6-second piano2.wav file. I bet it plays just fine.
By Recording Something, I suspect you really mean capture something somebody else already recorded, right? For that, you need the Windows Control Panel.

Well, the sample WAV did play just fine - but I've done everything the control panel guide stated, checked several times, and am still having precisely the same problem. Sorry to be a bother.

Ahh, never mind, never mind!
I downloaded my background as a custom WAV, works like the proverbial charm. Thanks for all yer help, Koz!
