Cue Points

Post by mal_CanDo » Mon Apr 06, 2009 2:41 pm

Hi there,

I was hoping to use Audacity to add cue points to a WAV file, but Audacity doesn't seem to support this ( I did a quick google search, and most of the other commercial apps, eg GoldWave support this ).

Is cue point support planned, or was it considered previously and dropped as a potential feature?
I'm using GoldWave now to add this feature for my project, but it would of course be cool if I could use Audacity for all sound processing options.

Best regards, and keep up the great work!

What are you using the cue points for?

Audacity doesn't support Edit Points, either. The closest it gets is Labels.

Hi kozikowski,

I'm using cue points within Adobe Director ( / Shockwave ) to trigger code events. This is a fairly common thing to do when dealing with synching sound with code in Director, and so if Audacity supported cue points, it should appeal even more to this existing audience / developer base.

The standard WAV format does not support cue points, so any programs that put cue points into WAV files are being rather naughty. It is a known issue that adding non-standard data into WAV files causes incompatibility issues with some applications that are expecting standard WAV format files.

There are some variations of the standard WAV format, such as "Broadcast Wave Metadata" (.BWM) that do support additional information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Wave_Format

I believe that Audacity has partial (basic import) support for BWM file, but that this does not include support for cue points.
